Boeschepe. Reveille 5.30, breakfast 7.30, left Boeschepe 9 o’clock am for dugouts Zillebeke Lake, went with 1st squad to Blue Fort Farm.
21 Tuesday
Went up to Hill 60 collecting, went to bed at 12.30. Heavy firing. Waggon orderly, went in pouring rain Armough wood, heavy fire.
22 Wednesday
On duty at Brigade head quarters in cellar awaiting messages, terrific bombardment.

Went to Blue Point Farm collecting.
Heavy bombardments by our artillery.

Zillebeke.
Went collecting to Blue Point Farm, under rapid rifle fire.
Near escape 2 yards from shell killed RFA. [Royal Field Artillery]
25 Saturday
A concentrated bombardment in conjunction with other parts of our line was opened by our artillery 4am followed by charge at 5am. 3 lines of trenches & 187 & 2 Officers taken prisoners, French advance 21 kil & take 18,000 prisoners & are still advancing. We took 10,000 prisoners in region of La Bassée.
26 Sunday
Hill 60.
Heavy bombardment by Germans taken up by us & repulsed in 1 hour.
Zillebeke all day collecting from Blue Point & railway. Heavy artillery bombardment prevails, rain all day, places 1ft deep in mud.
27 Monday
Hill 60.
On duty at Signal Office & it was shelled, a large piece of shrapnel came through the window & did not hit one of us.
28 Tuesday
Went to Blue Point collecting & saw Hasleden’s son’s grave at that place. Heavy rifle fire on our return.
29 Wednesday
On duty at Signal Office.
30 Thursday - 1 Oct
Zillebeke. Collecting at night from Hill 60 & the right of it by Armough Wood. Germans blow up a mine under North Staffords: 80 wounded, the parapet was rebuilt in 15 minutes & reserves fire rapid to hold Germans at bay with bomb throwing & aid of 9pnd Battery. Went to bed 4.30.

During September/October 1915, Frank was stationed near the town of La Bassee.
This postcard (above) shows the town before the war; it was badly damaged by shelling in October 1915.
